WHAT OUR CUSTOMER’S HAVE TO SAY
Today we stopped in at Mission Country Market (formerly Stutzman’s) in St. Ignatius—and what started as a quick snack run turned into one of the highlights of our trip.
We met the new owners, a kind and humble family who took time to share the story behind the market—its history, its heart, and how it continues to serve as a quiet bridge between worlds. It’s not just a store—it’s a living storybook of land, people, and tradition.
Originally opened in 2003 by a member of the local Amish community, the market was built to meet the needs of both Amish and English neighbors—with bulk goods, wholesome staples, and an atmosphere you can feel the moment you step inside. And two decades later, it still does.
Outside, there’s a hitching post for horses and buggies. We happened to arrive just as an Amish family was loading their wagon—children in plain dress helping their father tie up sacks of oats. It felt like time slowed down.
Inside, the store smells like cinnamon and fresh baked goods, Amish cheeses, gourmet sodas, and handmade breads. There’s a sandwich counter in the back where they slice meats to order and serve generous scoops of Montana-made ice cream.
It’s also the perfect place to snag thoughtful, one-of-a-kind gifts—everything from handcrafted goods to locally made jams and home items you won’t find at big-box stores.
And just when we thought it couldn’t be more charming—we learned there’s an airstrip right next door. That’s right: some people actually fly in just to shop here. It’s that kind of place.
St. Ignatius sits on the Flathead Reservation, where stories of Native tribes, Amish settlers, and Montana homesteaders all converge. The Amish here live quietly and reverently—working the land, raising their children, and coming into town when they need flour, fabric, or fellowship. Mission Country Market is where those needs are met.
If you’re ever passing through the Mission Valley—on your way to Glacier or just chasing beauty—make time for this place. Not because you need something, but because you need to feel something: the steadiness of tradition, the sacred slowness of simple living….
This place is a story you can walk through.
And if you’re lucky, like we were, the owners might just share a few chapters with you.

Loved this store!! Lots of homemade or bulk foods along with a deli and many choices of hand scooped ice cream. In addition, there’s a really big chair for photo opportunities.

We love visiting the store. There is a little bit of everything there. I love the delicious sandwiches and huckleberry ice cream. Yummy! Fresh food · Organic products · Prepared foods · Great selection · Local produce.
